Farm work wages in Australia vary a lot by crop, region and pay structure. Here is what backpackers really earn in 2025.
Casual hourly rates
Most farm work is paid casually at or above the Award wage. For horticulture, the casual rate is often $26–$32 per hour including casual loading. Piece-rate (paid per bucket/bin) work is legal but must meet the minimum hourly guarantee.
Piece-rate vs hourly
- Hourly: predictable income, ~$1,000–$1,300 per full week before tax.
- Piece-rate: can pay more if you are fast, but slow days earn less. Employers must top you up to the minimum if you earn less.
Tax for WHV holders
From your first dollar you pay 15% tax up to $45,000 (the working holiday maker rate). Keep your TFN and lodge a tax return — many backpackers get a refund.
